my thoughts about holistic medicine

So what, exactly, is holistic medicine – you might ask? That’s a very legitimate question, really.

The Webster’s dictionary defines it in this way: ‘relating to or concerned with wholes or with complete systems rather than with the analysis of, treatment of, or dissection into parts. Holistic medicine attempts to treat both the mind and the body.’

Having spent 30 plus years in the nursing profession where holistic practices were not the norm, it is refreshing to find myself being drawn to a circle of practitioners who see the importance of concerning themselves with their patients’ wholeness. In an article posted about Larry Dossey, M.D. in The Huffington Post today, there is a prime example of the kind of physician who promotes holistic medicine in the world. In this post you will see some of his blog topics that give evidence of what he stands for, teaches and supports.

This article also mentions his wife, Barbara Dossey, a nurse consultant. She co-wrote the core curriculum for the national Nursing Holistic Certification exam with Lynn Keegan, both previous Directors of the American Holistic Nurses Association. It is a true pleasure to call Lynn my friend, and be guided and mentored by her holistic teachings.

What I have learned in all this is that if I do not approach what I do with a holistic philosophy, I am no use to those I serve. I offer here my deep gratitude to those who have shown the way before me.
